This constant stalking of celebrities also has an incredibly negative impact on the children and family of celebrities who are also targeted. According to an article by the Associated Press, “Anti-paparazzi law strengthened in California,” states that a “2010 law raises the penalty for those who drive dangerously in pursuit of photos for commercial gain, making it punishable by six months in jail,” but this is not much of a punishment and hasn’t done much to stop the harassment of celebrities by paparazzi. This resulted in some legislation being passed in both England and California to limit the actions of paparazzi, but these laws are ineffective. She was being driven home from a hotel and their limo was being chased by paparazzi, making the driver (unreasonably) drive faster to escape from them, which resulted in the death of her and her boyfriend at the time. Paparazzi are endangering the community, celebrities, and themselves to get these photos.Īnother public incident that inspired some degree of strictness with celebrity photographers was the death of Princess Diana of Wales in 1997. This is not a safe practice and it’s only gotten worse over time. Photographers are going to extreme lengths to get sensational photos and collect their pay. One such incident occurred in 2013 when, according to a CNN article “Paparazzo killed by oncoming traffic after photographing Justin Bieber’s Ferrari” by Ben Brumfield and KJ Matthews, “A photographer who thought he spied Bieber sitting in his parked white Ferrari was struck and killed by oncoming traffic as he walked across a Los Angeles street to get back to his car after snapping photos” (Brumfield/Matthews). Not only are paparazzi constantly harassing celebrities in modern times, but they’re also putting themselves and the celebrities in danger. As it got worse, celebrities had to be prepared to be in the public eye even when doing simple tasks like grocery shopping. They began to worry about their image constantly instead of just on screen or at public events. With this came a decrease in the privacy of celebrities. Photographers started going to greater lengths– climbing trees and hopping fences– to get the next incredible photo. One notable event was “the 1962 shot of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton kissing on a yacht, though married to others,” which was one of the first sensationalized celebrity photographs (174). Although compared to modern times they were still relatively tame. Pretty soon after this movie’s release, celebrity photographers began to get more persistent and invasive, also arguably more effective. According to Karen Sternheimer, in her book “Celebrity Culture and the American Dream,” the word “paparazzi” was coined when a “1960 film La Dolce Vita brought the term… into the mainstream” (174). The “Paparazzi” is a relatively new phenomenon that began in the mid 20th century. It wasn’t until later that celebrity photographers started to get more aggressive. The photographers who took pictures of her didn’t trespass on her property or harass her to get them, or at least there aren’t any accounts of that. There are no private shots of her like many modern celebrities. All of the images available of Audrey Hepburn are staged or taken from a respectful distance. She most recognizable from her film “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” which was made in the early 1960s” (Werth). Photographers took shots of celebrities, but didn’t follow them and usually respected their privacy, One example of this is Audrey Hepburn, who as Jordan Werth described in their article “Macrohack/Mini Essay” was “an iconic hollywood starlet of the 1950s. There was a time when photography coexisted with celebrities in peace. More effective laws should be put into place to prevent this from occurring. The paparazzi have created a hostile environment for the public, celebrities, and their children, which is exacerbated by the class difference between the photographers and the celebrities. The term paparazzi is relatively new to our society, coming about within the last century. Celebrities have been complaining for years about the intrusiveness of the paparazzi. Photographers go too far in their attempt at getting a “good shot” of a celebrity. The paparazzi of modern times have negative effects on the mental health of celebrity and their families.
